Week 1 — Foundations of Algebra: The first week covers the conceptual shift from arithmetic to algebraic thinking — variables, expressions, and what an equation actually means. Students work through linear equations with one variable, learning to isolate the unknown using inverse operations. The instructor checks for common misconceptions (sign errors, distribution mistakes) and addresses them directly before they become habits.
Week 2 — Functions, graphing, and word problems: Week 2 introduces functions — what they are, how to identify them, and how to represent them as tables, graphs, and equations. Students practice translating word problems into algebraic expressions and equations, which is consistently the hardest skill for students entering Algebra 1. By the end of Week 2, students have a working familiarity with the core topics that appear in the first month of Algebra 1 class.
Algebra 1 Get Ready is led by a math instructor specifically trained in DUSD's Algebra 1 curriculum sequence. The instructor knows what DUSD teachers expect on Day 1 of Algebra 1 and structures the sprint to give students a meaningful head start on those exact expectations. With a maximum of 8 students, the instructor can identify and correct each student's specific misconceptions — not just deliver content to a group.
