Parent Resources · Summer Camp Guide

Find the right summer camp before you enroll.

Academic sprint, STEAM coding, or enrichment? The right choice depends on your child's gap, grade, and goal. Use this parent guide to narrow the decision in a few minutes.

Quick Answer

Choose a summer camp by matching the program to your child's primary need: academic gap support, transition preparation, STEAM skill-building, or enrichment. Then verify class size, instructor background, curriculum, and outcomes before enrolling.

What is your primary summer goal?

Choose the closest match. The recommendation is a decision guide, not a commitment.

Recommended for: Close an academic gap

Academic Summer Sprint

Choose a structured academic program when a specific gap could compound next year. Look for a diagnostic intake, small groups, a clear scope and sequence, and parent-readable progress updates.

Camp types

Compare the three real choices.

Academic Summer Programs

Math sprints, reading and writing, IM1 prep, high school intensive

Choose this if

  • A specific subject gap will compound next year if it is not addressed
  • Middle school math foundations are not solid
  • Integrated Math 1 is assigned for fall and your child feels underprepared
  • Reading comprehension or written explanations are weak
  • Repeated mistakes show up on the same problem types

Wrong fit if

  • Grades are strong and the goal is exploration or variety
  • Your child needs a lighter summer after a demanding year
  • The primary goal is social time, not skill-building

STEAM and Coding Camps

Python, AI, game development, robotics, project-based learning

Choose this if

  • Your child is academically on track and ready to build forward skills
  • They are curious about technology, engineering, or how things are built
  • They want to build something real, not just watch videos
  • They need a structured entry point into coding or robotics
  • They already code and want to move into AI, ML, or advanced projects

Wrong fit if

  • Math or reading gaps are significant and need attention first
  • The interest is not there yet
  • The program is mostly tutorials without independent building

GrowWise fit: STEAM camps, grades 1-12, June-August

Enrichment and Multi-Activity Camps

Arts, sports, nature, social exploration, lighter structure

Choose this if

  • Grades are strong and your child genuinely needs a break from academics
  • They thrive in group, activity-based settings
  • They have a specific nonacademic interest worth developing
  • The main goal is confidence, creativity, or social momentum

Wrong fit if

  • Academic gaps already exist
  • A hard grade transition is coming and the child is underprepared
  • You are hoping structured skills will develop passively

GrowWise note: enrichment is useful, but it is not GrowWise's primary focus

Parent proof

Families choose GrowWise for small groups, patient instruction, and confidence.

"GrowWise has been such a wonderful experience for my daughter. Her tutor has been incredibly patient, encouraging, and attentive to her individual learning needs. Since starting with GrowWise, I’ve noticed a big improvement in her confidence, focus, and overall understanding of subjects that used to be challenging for her. The lessons are engaging and tailored to her pace, which has made learning enjoyable instead of stressful. I’m truly grateful for the positive impact GrowWise has had on her academic growth and motivation."

"My son and I had a very positive experience with Growwise recently. My son attended the half-day python coding camp (Level 1 & 2), which was his first formal exposure to programming. Thanks to the small class size and the teacher's personalized approach, he was able to grasp the fundamentals of python and enjoyed working on the assignments and demo projects such as the Hangman game. The teacher provided prompt feedback after each session and offered helpful suggestions for future learning opportunities. I strongly recommend this program!"

Before you enroll

Five questions to ask any summer program.

"What is your average class size, not your maximum?"

The cap is marketing. The average is reality. Under 10 students per instructor usually allows more individual attention.

"What should my child be able to do at the end that they can't do now?"

Strong programs can name concrete outcomes. Vague answers like better skills or more confidence are not enough.

"What is the instructor's background in this subject?"

For academics, subject expertise matters. For coding, ask whether instructors have built real projects, not just taught tutorials.

"What is the week-by-week curriculum?"

Academic programs need a defined sequence. Coding camps should show what students build, not only what topics they cover.

"Is the curriculum aligned to my child's school pathway?"

This matters most for math. DUSD and PUSD pathways can make a generic summer math program cover the wrong content at the wrong time.

Local parent note

A quick diagnostic can prevent the wrong summer plan.

If you are choosing between academic support and enrichment, check for hidden gaps first. Fine grades can still hide weak foundations, especially before middle school math or Integrated Math 1.

Common questions

How do I choose the right summer camp for my child?+

Start by identifying your goals. Are you looking to boost academics, build confidence, or explore new interests like coding or public speaking? Once you know what you want your child to gain, match them with a camp that aligns with their goals and personality.

What types of camps are best for kids interested in STEM or coding?+

Tech-focused camps offering game development, coding, or AI projects are ideal. Look for programs that provide hands-on learning with experienced instructors and small group sizes for more personalized attention.

Can a summer camp help if my child struggles with math or reading?+

Yes. Academic summer camps reinforce key subjects like math and reading comprehension in a fun, low-pressure environment. These camps are designed to help kids catch up or get ahead while enjoying their summer.

What skills will my child gain besides coding?+

Students build problem-solving and logical thinking, creative design and storytelling, communication and collaboration, and digital entrepreneurship skills. These skills transfer across academics and real-world learning.

How important is the student-to-teacher ratio in summer camps?+

Very important. A low student-to-teacher ratio ensures your child gets individualized support and stays engaged. It also allows instructors to better understand and respond to your child's learning style.
