Week 1 — Finding the gap: The first week begins with a structured diagnostic — not a test, but a set of problem types that reveal exactly where a student's math understanding breaks down. From there, the instructor builds daily lessons around the specific gaps most common to that group: fractions, decimals, multi-step operations, or place value. Students work through problems in class with instructor support before practicing independently in the 30-minute practice lab.
Week 2 — Building the next step: In Week 2, instruction shifts from identifying gaps to applying skills in context — particularly word problems, which require students to identify what operation is needed, set up the problem correctly, and check their work. By the end of Week 2, students have a clearer sense of where they were stuck and how to get unstuck independently.
Bridge the Gap Math is led by a subject-trained math instructor experienced with elementary and middle school curriculum. The instructor is familiar with DUSD and Common Core grade-level expectations and structures each session around the skills students most commonly lack entering the next grade. With a maximum of 8 students per group, instruction is specific — not one-size-fits-all.
